In this podcast, I learned about Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy. It all started with his cousin that asked for help with math tutoring. He sent her step by step videos that gave her the push to become one of the best students in her class. Once the news broke, all his family wanted help with their kids. He had about 30 cousins he was tutoring. He figured he might as well put his videos up on youtube, not knowing that this was the start of his empire.
Khan Academy gives students the opportunity to grow not only their education, but their self-confidence as well. In the podcast, Sal Khan talks about classrooms being in a locked system that doesn’t benefit all students. The 30 student class system was created to Americanize immigrants. Summarizing, Khan explains that locked systems kills students’ curiosity. The students are expected to not engage or talk to others, they’re there to only listen. It’s a one way flow of information. But with the Sal Khan Model, it gives students the opportunity to take lectures at their own pace. It helps kids give that push of encouragement and realize their potential. He believes in this way, it is a philosophy of learning, not a philosophy of education.
Overall, this podcast was educational and engaging to listen to! It was really interesting to discover the background behind the huge platform of Khan Academy. As a teacher, it really puts into depth how many students can benefit from this website alone. It can help with not just learning purposes, but self-esteem issues as well!
